Rowlands Revenge over Burn

(Posted On Mon 24 June, 2013)

Davo won the toss at the Main V Seaton Burn and had no hesitation in batting first for 14 overs. He and Rowdy put on 100 for the first wicket before Don adjudged him lbw playing a sweep shot, probably off his glove. Davo had made a MoM 60 with ten fours before apologetic Don 'spoilt his night'. Gary Hall at square leg admitted it was difficult to give straight on but he backed Davo. Meanwhile, Rowdy amassed 47 with 4 fours and a six but was stumped also off Andrew White . Roy made a quick 21 with two 4s before running himself out for the cause. New boy Jack Byerley made 6 not out and Chad a last ball single to help post a competitive 143-3.

Seaton Burn were up for this and started at the required 10 per over. Pratty claimed his brace of victims both caught by Roy over the bowlers head to record a slightly expensive 4-0-29-2. Dave Covell went for 22 off 2 and Sam Maguire 38 off 3 and the score had kept up the rate. Good thinking from Davo who took the pace off the ball introducing Chad who took 2-23 off 3 overs, including a caught and bowled, and then Don. Don bowled their MoM Chris Coleman for 58 and had leader Andrew White caught of the last ball by Rowdy for 25 to win the game with 2-0-15-3. At last a stumping for Gary Straughan which Don much appreciated! The fielding had been excellent, especially the tireless and magnetic Gary Hall. Burn finished on 133-7, so close but Rowlands secured 10 points from the win.

With six league games to go, retaining the title is still possible.

Rowlands Fail to Add up!

(Posted On Thu 20 June, 2013)

At Backworth Davo won the toss and decided to bat first against Adders. He opened with Ben and the pair only managed 22 off the first 4 overs with Ben falling to a catch at the wicket off Ben Oliver for 10 (1 four). In came Roy to attempt to push on the scoring with Andy Bryant, fresh from his hip operation bowling off one step and tying Rowlands down, apart from three 4s off loose ones to record 3-0-24-0. The score moved on to 72 before Roy blamed his ear muffs for not hearing the call from the run out Davo. Davo recorded 24 with three 4s. At 53-2 by the end of the 8th over Rowlands were behind the expected rate and in came Ralph to show his intent. A quick 4 and a 6 and he was gone, missing one, for an encouraging 15. Rhys and Roy continued the assault with better effect and in the penultimate over Roy was clean bowled for 29 (three 4s) by the returning Oliver (4-1-24-2) with all eyes on the deep mid on boundary! Rhys went on to score 33 not out (three 4s) with Dave Covell hitting 3 not out in his short visit to the crease. In their 14 overs Rowlands made 122-4 thanks to the late upping of the rate. Dan Clark had taken some punishment with 4-0-46-1 claiming the wicket of Ralph.

The Adders reply with Dan Clark and Mark Minto showed their intent immediately. Pratty went for 24 off 3 and Dave Covell 30 off 3 to see Adders up with the required rate. Sam 2-0-27-0 and Don 2-0-24-0 had even less joy as the pink ball visited the boundary at a regular rate. For what turned out to be the penultimate over, Davo turned to magic Roy who suddenly got lift and movement to have the ball going up in the air. One chance was taken with Rhys catching Dan Clark for 53 who walked despite a no ball call from square leg for a high one from Roy that was falling short; 1-10 off an over could have been even more impressive. Graeme Seddon bowled 4 balls for 8 runs and Adders were home in the 12th over with Minto on 61 not out. Superstar Roy was nominated for his third successive Man of the Match. The fielding was good with not many byes past Gary and several 2s turned back into 1s.

Rowlands Outgunned by Kirkwood

(Posted On Mon 17 June, 2013)

Davo lost the toss so Rowlands fielded first back home at Percy Main to Kirkwood. Pratty struck early to beat the cross bat of Mukhtar, out for 5 but then M Usman was joined by Jaswinder Singh, the coastguard alert was sounded and the pink balls flew off the bat. Pratty recorded 1-27 off 3 and Dave Covell 0-30 off 3 before Davo changed it. In came Don and Sam Maguire to the attack. Don went a long was for 16 off his first over, Sam for 15 but he claimed Singh with a skied catch to the safe hands of Davo for a rapid 55. Don then bowled a tight over for only 5 but the runs continued to flow. Don got hit again to conclude with 0-30 off 3 and Sam took another wicket this time Roy caught Usman in the deep for 52. Sam bowled out with 4-0-50-2 and Pratty finished with a good over to record 4-0-43-1. Kaleem was still there with 28 not out as the target set reached 171-3 off 14 overs. The fielding had been sharp enough and Gary kept well once again.

The Rowlands reply saw Dave Covell and Davo attempt the almost impossible! After a good start up with the rate, Dave fell caught for 10 and in came Roy. The Davo and Roy show nearly pulled it off with some big shots; Kirkwood were concerned for a while. Davo had bat trouble before being caught on the deep mid off boundary for 39 (6 fours) and Roy went bowled by Richie Crawford for 41 (6 fours also). Lee Buglass showed some class in Don's borrowed spikes with a firm bat to hit 24 not out (3 fours) but it was by now a lost cause. Rees hit 6 with a boundary 4 before being run out. Matt Gosnall 4 not out and Sam 2 not out took the score to a creditable 138-5 to win 2 batting points. Crawford recorded 2-36 off 4 fiery overs and Singh 1-29 off 3 overs. The reply was just too big an ask but all credit to the batsmen who tried.

Rowlands have been awarded the homegame V Corbridge Ratcatchers who could not field a team on either date offered to them.

Giles Wears the Smiles!

(Posted On Wed 12 June, 2013)

Rowlands travelled all the way to Whitley Bay and Davo won the toss as usual, deciding to bat. He opened together with Ben whom he lost, caught behind for 7 (one 4). Roy then went the same way for 6 (one 4) and to the same bowler Adam Went. Davo then fell bowled by the pacy but variable Scott Latimer for 12 (two 4s). Rowlands were in trouble, especially as Aidan then was caught of off Latimer. Dave Covell, in at number 4 showed authority over the bowling from the off and pierced the boundary repeatedly. Peter McLeod held his end up well to almost see off the openers but fell lbw to Went for 4.Gary Straughan hit a 4 and was out caught; Jake hit two convincing 4s in 12 before being bowled Alex Giles and Don and Pratty did not trouble the scorers as the valiant Dave hit 59 not out to give Rowlands some hope at 113 all out (10 men). Dave hit 4 fours and 4 sixes in a great display of controlled aggression to give him a MoM award. For the record the Bay bowling was Latimer 4-0-45-2, Went 4-0-25-3, Giles 3-0-18-1, Simon May 2.4-0-22-3.

The Bay reply saw Graham Ord and the afeared Marcus Turner open up. However our superb opening bowlers Pratty and Aiden were more than equal to the task with Gary taking the rising ball cleanly. The openers were both soon back in the shed with only 7 and 6 to their names. Aidan bowled Turner with a subtle slower one and Pratty had Ord caught by Ben. Aidan quickly bowled another for his competitive 4-0-18-2 which included 8 in enthusiastic overthrows! Pratty thanked Ben for a second comfortable catch and 4-0-24-2. By now Ben Harris was batting sensibly and he was joined at the crease by Alex Giles. This pair consolidated well and survived chances at the wicket off Don who recorded 3-0-24-0. However, Giles, in particular, laid in to Dave Covell and with 6 fours and 2 sixes in his 52 not out won home for the Bay with 5 balls to spare. Dave suffered 2.3-0-45-1 with a consolation catch in the last over by Gary at the wicket. Ben Harris was run out for a creditable and steady 31 which helped to make the Bay victory by 4 wickets possible.

Rowlands might have won this one with 13 required off the final over but had to be satisfied with 3 bonus points and Giles wore the smiles.

Next week's confirmed games are Monday at Percy Main V Kirkwood and Thursday at Backworth V Adders (rearranged after postponement)

P&G DestROYed

(Posted On Wed 5 June, 2013)

Ten man Rowlands faced 9 man P&G at the Flames in the much delayed first round of the Just Sport Cup. Rowlands batted with Roy and new man Aidan Berry opening up. The first few overs were tight and only produced 21 runs. However the change bowlers allowed our lads to let loose and with gay abandon the score rocketed! Aidan was caught for 35 (3 fours and a six) to be replaced by James Carr. The new pair kept the momentum going through to the end of the allotted 14 overs. Roy made 70 with 8 fours and a six and Rowdy got 31 not out with 3 fours. The total was 156-1.

The P&G reply stumbled straight away as Pratty performed his fastest and best yet for Rowlands, to almost steal Roy's MoM, with a devastating 4-0-17-4 helped by two catches from the Rowdy one; the other two were bowled by sheer pace! At the other end Dave Covell was unlucky not to take a wicket with 4-0-32-0 the recording. Don took 1-31 off 4 overs as P&G refused to go quietly. Aidan performed 2-0-17-1 with a catch by keeper Adam Tait to get in on the act. Top scorer for P&G was S Amand with 30 not out in their 99-6 reply. Rowlands are away to either ORP or Boxbreakers who do battle tomorrow, Thursday 6th June.
