Fenham's delayed start to the season finally got underway on Wed 18th May with a resounding win over fellow promotees CCC. The threat of rain never really materialised and conditions were mostly dry with just a few spots of rain which fizzled out straight away. A win looked unlikely at 5pm with two late withdrawals, and the sight of Shaf Latif interrupting his mobile phone conversations to take a catch on the boundary was badly missed. Two substitute fielders were found however, and Fenham amassed a tremendous score of 154-3 off only 14 overs. Solid scores of 30 by Mohsin on his debut and a classy 42* n.o. by the skipper Riaz provided the base, but it was an explosive unbeaten 67* from Mukhtar which done for CCC, which included eight 4's and three massive 6's.
The visitors put up some resistance but with Zak pinning danger man Rian early they were always on the back foot although Tomlinson scored a very good 39 in their reply of 97. Fenhams four man pace attack led by Riaz with 4-17, was always going to defend that score, and so it turned out. Highlight of the match was when ex-Fenham player Mudasser Amin came out to bat to a warm welcome. Desperate to make his mark on his old team, Mudasser was devastated to see his stumps sent cartwheeling by new boy Shazad Gul and trudged off forlornly to a generous round of applause from the Fenham fielders, having gone for a duck. On the bright side, improving his average (0) should not be too difficult from this point and the lads at Fenham wish him well on this quest.
A good day in all and signs are good that the new look Fenham will live up to the exploits of last season when they ran away with the 3rd Div title. Next up, back to back fixtures against Adders and Coquet on Wed/Thurs.
