Practice game at Clara Vale proves successful

(Posted On Thu 29 April, 2004)

A practice game involving the Genetics and the Mallards team proved very successful on Sunday, even though it was arranged at the last minute. 20 players turned out in the glorious April sunshine and enjoyed the lovely English spring climate. It was a pity the pitch didn't get into the spirit of things and played low throughout the day. After Genetics lent Mallards several players for the afternoon, new boy Andy Jeffery kicked proceedings off by going out for a golden duck, and went off muttering unpleasant words about the pitch. After being reduced to 53 for 8, someone in the Genetics team thought they would play their trump card and declare. Thank goodness he wasn't captain, as Genetics went on to make 92 all out. Mallards started brightly and looked certain to overhaul the score with little effort, but once the openers were out, wickets started to tumble, and Genetics scored a very narrow win. It was only 5:30 so a quick 16 over game was the order of the day, and history repeated itself as Genetics once again won by a narrow margin.
This weekend sees a home game at Close House against Ovingham.

Genetics edge towards title glory

(Posted On Sun 17 August, 2003)

Genetics took the game against St Teresa’s at Heaton on Tuesday, but had to work hard for the points. St Teresa’s batted first and lost John Harrison early on to Chris Mee, after having an earlier appeal against the same batman rejected. St Teresa’s then steadied their innings and it was once again up to Chris Mee to take 2 more wickets to remove the top order. Davy Heslop chipped in with 2 wickets, but the 7th wicket (and that valuable bowling point) remained as elusive as ever, St Teresa’s finishing on 93 for 6. In reply, Mike Gardner (23) and Jon Robinson (52 not out) batted superbly to leave the result of the match in no doubt, and Dion Krishnan came in at the end to make a quick-fire 19 not to gain victory by nine wickets. So 8 points gained, Genetics need to win their last league game against old rivals CCC to ensure title glory.

Ovingham outclassed by Genetics

(Posted On Fri 8 August, 2003)

In a good all-round performance, almost everyone contributed with bat and ball as Genetics defeated a gutsy Ovingham side at Close House. Batting first, Genetics accumulated runs steadily with Andrew Porteous (23), Jon Robinson (21), Dave Jones (13), Gez Greenwood (21), Gary van Doorn (10), and Chris Mee (14) all making double figures. But undoubtedly the highlight of the day was Davy Heslop’s masterful 65, bowled on the last ball of the Genetics innings of 201.
The Ovingham innings was in trouble throughout, and could only make 66 in reply with Brian Taylor, Dave Jones, Chris Drought, and Mike Gardner all getting 2 wickets.

BA fails to take off against strong Genetics side

(Posted On Fri 8 August, 2003)

On a warm Wednesday evening in the middle of a heat wave, BA was outclassed by a strong Genetics side at Blue Flames. BA batted first, and were unlucky to get a dubious caught behind decision go against them in the early overs. Worse was to come, and some excellent catching by the Genetics team, and the fact that a weakened BA only had nine men turn up, meant that they could only manage to score 54 all out. Chris Mee bowled well with 3 wickets, and was well supported by Grant Mason. Brian Taylor (2 wickets), and Gary van Doorn (3 wickets) wrapped up the tail with a minimum of fuss. With 10 points within grasp, and a strong batting line-up, the Genetics team went all out to overhaul the small target, only losing 2 wickets on the way. Andrew Porteous used up several more of his nine lives (25 not out), but batted well to see the target reached in just over 6 overs. So maximum points attained, and there are just two more league games left in the season to gain promotion.
