The three new members of CCC proved highly effective against old rivals Genetics at a Heaton Medicals ground bathed in spring sunshine.
Runs are always hard to find at Heaton, so to accumulate over 100 runs on a very slow outfield suggests plenty of action, and accordingly spectators were treated to an entertaining game, with Messrs Tom Woolhead and Matt Planchant showing early season form against the competent swing bowling of Genetics.
Matt plays his cricket in the Botham style - hit as many sixes as possible, while Tom showed a more measured approach with some nice strokes in a mid-innings stand with the solid Simon Edwards, who, by all accounts has improved his running between the wickets for the new season!
Genetics seemed to be rather subdued at the break, but a sound start from their opening pair set the scene for a thrilling finish. Tom found that bowling to an inform Genetics pinch hitter was not easy, and by mid-innings the game was nicely balanced.
The CCC skipper however found his team eager to give 100 percent in the field, typified by new recruit Andy Holburn, who will remind many older members of David Comish - a fine athlete.
It's always nice to win in the last over of a tight game, but all credit to Genetics who as ever were very capable opponents. Watch out CCC in the rematch - last year I witnessed (from the boundary) broken shoulders and alll sorts of mayhem!
For now though well done; a fine win for a nicely blended side.

An exciting encounter at Heaton yesterday resulted in CCC defeating Genetics by 7 runs.
Groundsman Paul deserves credit for preparing what must be the best track at this ground in a number of seasons, certainly for the time of year. The bounce was true and there was something there for batsmen and bowlers.
CCC hit 109-6 of 14 overs, with Simon E and Tom putting on a steady 50 stand after 2 early wickets, and Matt marking his debut with a wonderful last over which yielded a crucial 21 runs.
Genetics were always just a little behind the rate, apart from a couple of overs in the middle of their innings. Rian bowled a superb tight spell, and Derek continued where he left off last season. With 15 required from the last over CCC held out with Matt taking a couple of late wickets and helping himself to the man of the match award.

There was excitement amongst meteorologists and astronomers today when it was announced that the sky will turn blue for approximately five minutes at 12.45 hours, Thursday 13th May.
The unusual meteorological condition - known as "clear skies" - will allow increased permeation of the sun's rays to ground level. This will have physical side effects such as the "drying" of grass. However, the greatest effects will be social, with people expected to shun their coats, and with some women expected to wear attractive skimpy tops and short skirts, allowing the sun to glisten upon their smooth, tanned legs. One sociologist from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne warned that the conditions could be expected to lead initially to general feelings of bonhomie towards one's fellow man, but that these feelings will become tainted as alcohol is consumed in beer gardens across the north east. "The 'clear skies' syndrome will cause all sorts of concern for the emergency services," she added. "People will drink too much and they may receive burns to their pallid anaemic flesh."
But amongst the public at large there was a sense of anticipation at the prospect of such a rare event. The secretary of a cricket team that hasn't played a game in almost a year said that he had "high hopes" that his team could actually play a competitive match. However, local weather experts were urging caution: "The clear skies are only expected to last a matter of minutes before the clouds return," claimed one. "I urge everyone to stay cool."

"BEST CUP RUN IN YEARS"
Supporters were celebrating today as CCC made the last 16 of the North East Mid Week Cricket League's premier cup competition, the North East Mid Week League Cup. It represents CCC's biggest achievement in the competition since its inception ages ago. "We're in dreamland", said club secretary Cliff Spencer. "The sense of excitement is tangible. We won our first round tie fair and square. We were the...erm, the most complete all round team."
CCC won their first round tie against Whickham Glebe after the opposition defaulted.
