I'm sure all at CCC would like to extend their best wishes to John, and to wish him a quick recovery following the horrendous injury sustained in the match v Civil Service.

CCC Quiz Success

(Posted On Wed 20 August, 2003)

CCC's beleaguered quiz team demonstrated their tenacity last night with a superb 2nd place finish in the Chillingham 'Pop Quiz'. Hit by depleted brain cells and lack of knowledge of the contents of Hello magazine, this season has been one of struggle in various quizzes across Tyneside. On this occasion, however, experience and sheer willpower saw CCC almost take first prize.

"We just dug in and demonstrated our knowledge of popular music of the last 40 years, even the likes of S Club 7," said skipper Simon Edwards. "Once again it was our old weakness, the picture round that let us down. What we thought was the Electric 6 proved to be Jane's Addiction, for godsakes. I never knew they were so camp...Bin Caught Stealing... Stealing what? Their mams' underwear by the looks of them!"

Edwards reserved much of his praise for the efforts of Simon Woodman, whose 'specialist knowledge' proved the difference between third place and second. "Simon really came to the fore - he's a very resourceful quizman."

The experienced Derek Marshall was also singled out for his knowledge of the types of pop music that know one else is prepared to admit to.

A further piece of good news was that a total of £6 was won for the club kitty by virtue of the second place finish. Unfortunately CCC missed out on any prize winnings for finishing second in the preceeding cricket match.

Cricketers Accused of 'Dumbing Down'

(Posted On Thu 14 August, 2003)

A local cricket team stands accused tonight of 'dumbing down' its performances. A leaked memo reveals that the team, Computing Cricket Club, had performed 'sensationally' on Tuesday night, but within 24 hours had put in another performance described as 'absolute toss'.

CCC officials were quick to deny the claims. "Obviously the performance on Wednesday was disappointing. The lads are completely gutted," said vice captain Roger French, "but overall I think you'll find our performances are improving in the medium to long term, if you extrapolate the trends fully from a more realistic base." Skipper Simon Edwards agreed: "I'm not quite sure what he's on about, but it sounds convincing enough for me," he said.

The fact cannot be denied, however, that within a short time period CCC's performance has declined dramatically. Following the 3 wicket win against Fenham, they lost by 7 wickets to Genetics with 5 overs to spare. Market analysts claim that this makes a lottery of the league system: "Genetics are now promoted," said one, "yet amazingly CCC may also clinch promotion. This sort of performance is dumbing down and it renders the league system meaningless."

However,French's argument becomes compelling if the long term statistics are to be believed. "Back in 1873," he remembers, "we lost 50-odd matches on the trot. We've definitely improved overall since then. We do at least win some games now." "We will be endeavouring to raise our standards for our next match, against Civil Service," said club secretary Cliff Spencer. "Two more veg kormas please," he added, clicking his fingers.

View from the Boundary...

(Posted On Wed 13 August, 2003)

...Blue Flames boundary that is. Spectators of course get a different view of the game, and the defeat of Fenham was the best CCC win of the season.

This was Simon E's finest batting performance.

Against some classy hostile bowling, and very well supported by all the CCC lads, the skipper remained calm when confronted by unpleasant and unecessary over-reaction from some of the opposition, who should be ashamed of themselves.

Congratulations to all the team who (in true CCC style), embrace winning and loosing in the same way - with dignity.

Cliff Spencer

Fenham Doubled

(Posted On Wed 13 August, 2003)

Another superb bowling and fielding display at Blue Flames saw CCC dismiss much fancied Fenham for 61 in dark, greasy conditions last night. Derek Marshall returned another stunning performance with 4-19, whilst Rian put in an almost unplayable 4 overs, taking 1-10. Tim (1-10) and Andy (4-13) also bowled superbly, whilst the ground fielding was top notch with several catches being taken, including 3 by Ian Randall, two of which were at point.

Batting against a top class fast bowling side was never going to be easy, even with a relatively small total to aim for. CCC lost 7 wickets - all of them bowled or run out in contrast to the Fenham wickets, most of which were caught - but got home comfortably in the end with the skipper scoring 36 not out.

This was a highly competitive game which at times threatened to spill over into controversy. However, at the end it was hand shakes all round, with CCC claiming a double over this opposition. What a shame one of the games against Humshaugh couldn't also have been won.

Tonight CCC play another promotion challenger, and long term colleagues, genetics at Heaton.

Team v Fenham: R. Rian, I. Randall, K. Reader, S. Edwards, R. Khan, J. Reed, P. Bennett, D. Marshall, A. Boyes, T. Hall, A. Holden
