CCC pulled off another spectacular win, this time against Paddlers at a gloomy Bates Cottages last night.
Starting with only 8 players CCC bowled first and saw the home team off to a flyer with the ball fizzing to the boundary with regularity. Paddlers were 101-2 after only 6 overs when Majid and Mudassar arrived. With neutral league umpires the rule book was applied accordingly and Majid was unable to bowl until 35 minutes had elapsed. This left Greg to take the bowling plaudits with 2-21, an excellent performance in the circumstances, as Paddlers were reduced to 148-5 from their 12 overs. CCC's deep catching was again excellent with Nick, Simon E, Majid and Greg all taking good ones.
It transpired that Paddlers themselves only had 8 players. Greg initially took advantage, hammering 43 from 22 balls whilst his brother got going. In the end excellent hitting from Nick (72 not out) and Majid (27), in almost pitch darkness, saw CCC home by 8 wickets with 11 balls to spare.

CCC put in a mixed bag of a performance against local rivals ORPS on Wednesday to stay in the promotion hunt.
An outstanding fielding and bolwing performance dismissed ORPS for 84. Majid took 5-27, with Mark, Fiaz, Matty, Ewan and Chandra (2-0 off 5 balls) all chipping in, whilst the catching and ground fielding was excellent: Nick (2), Simon E and Mark (a special effort) all taking catches in the deep.
This was a simple target despite the absence of Chris, but CCC never make things straightforward. Greg and Nick went in the first over. A period of retrenchment against good bowling from Arun and Xohaib nudged the score up into the thirties, before a decisive partnership between Fiaz (41) and Majid (25) almost saw CCC home. That was until a spate of nervous wickets at the end left Mudassar to chip two runs with an over left to see CCC home by 3 wickets.

Such is the congestion in the Division II league table that CCC calculated prior to the game at Seaton Burn on Tuesday that two wins are probably required from 4 to stay up, but 3 wins would present a chance of promotion. As Seaton Burn are currently bottom of the pile it was imperative that points were taken in this fixture.
CCC lost the toss and were inserted on a breezy and chilly evening at the Drift. Chris went for 1 and Nick took ages to get going on the traditionally slow, slopey wicket. It was Greg who hit a cameo 24 and got the innings in gear, then Nick found his touch hitting a reverse sweep for 4, and two 6s, being particularly harsh on Ellis the opposition spinner and skipper. Once Simon E went for 14 and Nick also departed late on for 61 the rest of the batting collapsed like a pack of cards (5 for 9 in two overs) leaving CCC on a vulnerable 116 all out.
Seaton Burn were gifted full bowling points and would have fancied their chances, however, the visitors were to put in one of their very best bowling and fielding displays to limit them to 109 all out off 13.3 overs.
Ewan disappeared for a 4 and a 6 in his first over but recovered to bowl a superb over at the death and take figures of 3-20. Matty overcame a shaky first over to bamboozle several batsmen with variations in flight and length to take 3-31. Chandra bowled an outstanding spell, the second over of which was probably the best over by a CCC bowler since Abra Ahmed at Mitford in 2008. He took 2-30. Mudassar swung the ball prodigiously without luck to take 0-24. Add in two stumpings from Woodman, two run outs involving fine throws and keeping, two gully catches from Chris and excellent ground fielding (especially from Greg and Mudassar on the big boundary) CCC were well deserved winners against a useful and youthful batting line up.
CCC (10 points): Nick, Chris, Greg, Simon E, Peter, Simon W, Mudassar, Ian J, Ewan, Chandra, Mattyy
Cap: Nick
Duck: Ewan (mainly for knocking in his new internet-bought bat all through the CCC innings whilst wearing cool shades before not using the bat in the one ball he faced in the process of getting stumped, and then forgetting his shades after the match - I have them Ewan)

Last week saw two difficult games for CCC away to Fenham and at home to Mitford. There is nothing that can be said about the Fenham game at the present time due to ongoing actions with the police and the LMC after an "incident". It appears that CCC have been awarded the win based on the scores at the point when the game was abandoned.
Runaway leaders Mitford cam to Heaton on Wednesday and gave CCC a lesson in unspectacular but organised and effective cricket. A quartet of accurate slow-medium pace bowlers prevented the home side scoring enough runs as 110-6 was posted. Nick, Chris, Matt all scored 20s and Peter 19 not out, but the total was at least 10 short of a competitive one.
Wayward bowling in CCC's first four overs got the visitors off to a fine start so that no fireworks were needed later in the innings. Though Johnson and Mudassar put the brakes on a bit they achieved their target with an over to spare.

CCC completed back-to-back wins against Adders on 6th and 7th July, both at Heaton. The 18 points in two days maintains a chance of promotion.
On the Tuesday Adders scored 112-7 with Matt Planchant taking 4-31. Nick (54 NO), Chris (44), and Matt P (15 NO) saw off that total. The following day Adders amassed only 84-7 with Ewan taking 2-20, Mark 2-20, Matty 2-22 and Guy 1-15, which CCC saw off to win by 10 wickets in 8.1 overs (Simon E 43 NO, Chris 37 NO).
