Chilly Quiz Triumph

(Posted On Thu 12 June, 2008)

CCC completed a memorable double last night with victory in the Chillingham Arms quiz. The yield was £8 for club funds and four cans of lager for the end of season curry.

Monkseaton Cap 'n Duck

(Posted On Thu 12 June, 2008)

Cap: the cap went to Nick for his excellent 49 not out. There were honourable mentions for Simon W for his 6 to cow which set the ball rolling, for Stuart for deliberately dropping an absolute dolly which allowed us to dismiss the better batsman next ball, and for Mudassar for an all round decent fielding performance.

Duck: disgracefully the duck went to the skipper for a) agreeing to go back on after the rain break, b) shouting 'catch it' to Stuart when the ball was flying into the rugby stand, c) for keeping Guy on for four overs, and d) getting the fielding positions wrong in the first 7 overs. Honourable mentions were Mudassar for tradition's sake, Pete for dropping Zanetti early on, Guy for moaning about his wides, and Nick for snoozing on the boundary and refusing to move when asked... and for his over-revealing underwear in the changing room.

CCC Pull Victory from the Jaws of Defeat

(Posted On Thu 12 June, 2008)

CCC pulled an unlikely victory out of the bag last night, defeating Monkseaton Saints by a faster scoring rate at rain-soaked Heaton.

The visitors won the toss and chose to bat. For reasons unknown CCC put in an abysmal 7 overs allowing Zanetti and Taylor to put on an unbeaten 83. This was CCC at their shoddiest, with wayward bowling, poor field positions and untidy fielding. Then the rain came. Cliff assured us that it was set in for the night, and he and Mudassar got changed, but at 19.15 it stopped and Monkseaton persuaded the groundsman that we should resume playing.

The rain break seemingly changed CCC's whole approach, as Aly immediately removed Zanetti (38), well cought at long off by Mudassar. With Derek coming on to tie up the other end, Matthew removed Taylor (57), well caught at long on by Skinks. Monkseaton were reduced to 124-2 off 14 overs.

Simon Woodman showed CCC's intentions with an 8 ball 15 (including 2 fours and a 6), before being bowled by a pearler. Nick took on the Chris role, playing aggressively for 49 not out, and Simon E scored at more than a run a ball for 25 not out. An unbeaten partnership of 75 in pretty dark conditions took CCC to 92-1 off 8 overs when the rain returned and Monkseaton insisted we leave the field. They obviously hadn't done their sums, beacuse at a similar stage they were 90-0; thus, CCC won by a two run margin.

CCC Throw It Away

(Posted On Tue 3 June, 2008)

CCC slipped to their first defeat of the league season against an impressive Kingstonian at Percy Main last night.

The home side won the toss and chose to bat. Once again Cliff rose to the occasion, taking 4-25, with Guy taking a wicket and Matthew 2 on his return to first class cricket, restricting Kingstonian to 89-8 from 14 overs.

Such a total should not have troubled CCC, but doubts were sown with the loss of Nick in the first over to the quick left arm seam of Nihalraj. Even Chris struggled to score off this bowler, apart from one sublime pulled four. When he also removed Greg, a decision was taken to play him off, which though done successfully put pressure on CCC to score from the other end.

The loss of Chris, unluckily run out when he lost track of the ball at his crease, meant that the responsibility lay with a set of batsmen who have barely been at the crease this season. The challenge was too much, as on a slow pitch against experienced slow bowlers, Simon, Mudassar, Peter and co were simply unable to maintain the scoring rate. CCC ended on 78-8, taking 3 points against a team who are very likely to challenge for silverware.

CCC 2 Kingstonians 8

Team: Nick, Chris, Greg, Simon E, Mudassar, Peter, David, Matthew, Guy, Cliff, Derek
