Rowlands lose out in 6 shoot out at Beamish

(Posted On Fri 5 August, 2011)

Davo won the toss and elected to bat on a dodgy wicket with his soul mate Ben. The pair struggled against the slow attack of Richie Deacon and the quicket Stafford. Runs were hard to come by and the pitch uncertain. Only 17 runs came off the first 4 overs and 60 off 8. In the 9th over Davo was bowled by Lee Kirtley for 22 (1 four, 1 six) and then Roy was caught at short mid wicket off one that popped for 5 (1 four). Chad joined Ben and they reached 71 off 10 overs with Beamish deep fielders covering the boundary to good effect. In the 11th over, Chad hit Kirtley for SEVEN sixes to suddenly give the innings much needed momentum! Unfortunately Ben was then bowled by Tinninon for 32 (2 fours) and Chad was bowled by the first ball from Gary Johnson for 49 (7 sixes). The last few overs saw the Rowlands lads scratching for runs with Adeel run out for 1 and A Wilkin bowled for 1 while Mike o'Brien made 3 not out and Mark Gray 1 not out. Rowlands closed their 14 overs on 124-6.

The Beamish response was to send in 6 shooter Ryan McVittie and he paid no respects to Ian Pratt's first over which went for 18. Adeel at the other end was more economical and recorded 2-0-18-1 with a casual catch at deep mid on by Ben. Ian was unlucky to have a catch dropped at the wicket thanks to the full blast of the sun in the keeper's face but went on to suffer 2-0-28-0 as McVittie hit big. Adam Wilkin was tried and he went for 21 off an over then Don steadied things at the other end to finally nail McVittie, bowled for 80. Ben went for 24 off an over and Roy for 14 off one, leaving Don to finish with a further wicket, caught by Ben in the same manner as previously, and be denied a hat-trick as the final run was taken off a very difficult chance somewhere near mid-wicket. Don recorded 2.2-0-20-2 as Beamish won by 7 wickets in the 11th over.

Rowlands Frustrate top team Adders

(Posted On Thu 4 August, 2011)

Rowlands entertained high flying Adders with the first appearance this season of the Hynd twins, Alan and Matt. Matt skippered, lost the toss and opened with Dave Haxon. It was going slowly against the accurate attack of Joy Saini and Chris Gaudi. Off the bowling of Saini, Dave hit a powerful off drive which was superbly intercepted by Gaudi and Dave was run out, stranded at 27-1 for 4 singles. In came Roy and the pair took the score to 107 in tricky circumstances with Dan Clark and Andy Bryant also difficult to get away and the fielding keen. Finally Matt was bowled late on with a swinger by the returning Saini. He had scored a Man of the Match 54 with 7 fours. Craig came in only to be bowled last ball by Saini for 1 with Nick Brown next in but not required on this occasion. Roy meanwhile had hit a powerful 42 not out including 4 fours. So Rowlands made 115-3 off the 14 overs with 2 batting points and denied Adders any bowling points.

The Adders were really up for the victory and discussing how to make maximum 3 batting points as Dan Clark and James Sutton took to the crease. Ian Pratt and Bob Wilson opened the Rowlands attack and did reasonably well to contain the Adders aggression. Pratty completed 4-0-34-1 with a catch by Nick Brown at mid on to dismiss Sutton for 19. Bob recorded 2-0-22-0 and in came Chris Goudie with equal aggression. The change bowling of Don and Dave Haxon slowed the scoring rate to just below that of maximum batting points as every run was put up on the board immediately it was scored. Don had Dan Clark easily stumped by Alan for 43 and then Don bowled J Kimber first ball to record 4-0-29-2 with five highly vocal lbw shouts turned down. Dave had Bob Tulip caught be Phil Hornsey following a rejected stumping appeal to give him 3-0-27-1. Roy with 0.2-0-6-0 was then given an impossible task to avoid the final over runs required but they came in two given wides after a rejected lbw shout. Adders were home with 6 balls to spare but they were denied maximum batting points and only took 7 points from the game after the tight play from Rowlands which earned them 3 points.

Rowlands just fail to Flames

(Posted On Fri 15 July, 2011)

Ben skippered the team for the first time against Blue Flames at Ulgham. Flames batted first and suffered a 3 wicket collapse. Pratty was unlucky to have 2 catches dropped in his 2-0-20-0 but Bob Wilson with 3-0-22-2 captured the early wickets of openers Rob Walker and Paul McKeever with good catches by Ben and Richie. Roy then performed a very smart direct hit run out to see Flames at around 30-3. Richie bowled better than all season with a claimed new action and with 3-0-24-1 and a catch by Mike who kept well. Don had a great first 3 overs with the prize wicket of Richard Chapman caught for 30 by Chase and then bowled Dave Marshall first ball but 2-15 became 2-30 off 4 as Keith Brown and Andy Horner made more progress. Ben bowled two overs of real spin and had the batsmen in trouble. A c&b and a catch by Richie gave him 2-25 off 2. Chase recorded 1-26 off 2 with a second catch in the deep for Richie. Richie's last over just failed to win the final bowling point with Flames 151-9 off 16. Yes Davo, we played 16 overs! Keith Brown made 27, Andy Horner caught by Roy got 32 with Simon Taylor hitting a late 18 not out. The catching was good: Ben 2, Richie 2, Chase, Roy and Mike and probably in a different order to the above!

Rowlands new look opening pairing of Chase and Ben got off to a good steady start with an asking rate of nearly 10 an over. Chase was closely run out for 21 (2 big sixes and a four) with the score on 44 in the 5th over. Ben was playing the anchor role, joined by Roy who made 15 with a 4 and a 2 and many singles to the deep field before Andy Horner got his revenge and removed middle stump! Ben then self-destructed to be run out for 40 (3 fours and NO SIXES this time!). With the score on 94-3 in the 12th over Rowlands still had a chance but the bowling of Horner and Brown proved too tight. Richie made 14 not out (one six) and Phil in his own style hit 21 not out with a six and a four. The total of 134-3 was only 15 short but achieved 4 points to Flames seven.

Next week we entertain YAARS on Wednesday at Ulgham. Pratty is on the ball already, trying to stir up a winning team.

Rowlands recover from loss of early wickets at Mitford

(Posted On Wed 22 June, 2011)

Rowlands were put into bat on a soft wicket at Mitford and lost three early wickets. Davo was bowled first ball, Roy caught after hitting a 4 and Adeel for 8. Phil then was out for 1 with Ben who opened trying to hold the fort. Craig came in and helped steady the ship and with Ben the pair progressed well until Ben tried to fetch one from wide of off only to be caught for 40 at mid on! Two sixes and no cars hit this time! Chris Nicholson on his debut made an important 13 then at the death Mike Steven scored 1 and Richie Munro 2 not out. Craig meantime had swished away making the occasional contact and a welcome 35 not out in 133-7 off 14. Youngster Keiron Mole claimed 4-15 off his 3 overs by bowling outside off stump.

The Mitford reply was always behind the asking rate and this was a comfortable win for Rowlands. Pratty opened up with a mean spell of 3-0-12-2 with a superb catch by Mike, stretching with one glove and then a sharp catch by Roy in the self appointed gully position. Chris Nicholson bowled comendably to take 2-32 off 4 with another spectacular catch by Mike and one at deep fine leg by Richie, the key wicket of Colin Crowe. Roy achieved a run out after a brief fumble encouraged a suicidal second and Mitford were in trouble. The change bowling of Adeel accounted for the potential of Matt Ellinor and Adeel was as mean as 3-1-5-1. Don bowled 4 overs and went for only 13 plus a late six which just cleared Richie (by only 25 feet!) and suffered a spurned chance at mid off from his last ball. Mitford managed only 62-6 and Rowlands took 8 points from their third league win. Young Andy Gaynor scored 20 and the youngsters from Mitford did well.

The game next week we host GEM at Ulgham on Wednesday.

Rowlands Take Their Medicals!

(Posted On Mon 13 June, 2011)

At long last Rowlands secured another win. YAARS were the victim after inserting Rowlands on a soft wicket. Ben o'Brien and Davo opened with confidence and put on 74 for the first wicket. Davo was caught out on the legside boundary for 17 with one six. Panic then as Fenwick Friskin was caught for 2 and Sam Malpass for 1. Rowlands only 80-3 in the eighth over of 14! Ben kept bashing away and diverting the buses along Heaton Road to amass a Man of the Match 86 with 6 sixes and 5 fours before he was also caught on the boundary. Meanwhile regular Roy had totted up the runs and made a very important 40 not out with 2 sixes and 4 fours. Faz Tahir hit a useful late 10 not out with one 4. Rowlands recorded 167-4 and made the third batting point for the first time! The change bowling of Bobby Vedhara and Omar Ahmed had proved more difficult to despatch than A Mukhtar and Zahn Ahmed but this was surely a good total.

The YAARS reply saw Navid Iqbal, aka DC and Zahn Ahmed at the crease but Ian Pratt and the returning Chad Koen opend up well in defiance of the YAARS aggression. Pratty had DC caught fr 34 by Ben in the deep, rather casually on the boundary with the sun in his eyes! Pratty's opening spell was 1-26 off 3 and Chad went for 38 off 3. The change bowling of Adeel Waheed and Don Catley had a challenge to avoid runs on the very short West boundary with YAARS just short of the asking rate. Don burgled the wicket of Omar Ahmed who was confused by the spin and swept the ball onto his stumps. Good! Adeel spurned the chance of a caught and bowled but was pleased that Ben made sure of a catch for him, again casually on the same long on boundary, to record 3-0-40-2 with a catch also taken by Davo at conventional mid off. Runs were still mounting but Don produced a magic second over going for only 2 runs and the caught and bowled of their Waheed for a duck. Waheed took a catch for Don to give him 4-0-38-3 and Pratty returned to complete with 4-0-35-1. YAARS fell short with 152-6 and Rowlands took 9 points from the game. Zahn Ahmed the opener was still there with 49 not out. This was a great team effort with Mike Steven keeping well and Faz Tahir retiring late on with a suspect broken finger.
