Rowlands entertained Beamish & East Stanley at Ulgham and Davo opted for a mid-summer 12 over thrash with clouds on the horizon. RCA batted first with fenwick Friskin surviving a second ball stumping, Davo in attention at the other end and bowler Richie Deacon not too pleased, especially when the over went for 14 with two huge Frisky sixes! The pair put on about 40 for the first wicket when Fenwick was finally given out stumped by the attentive Ryan McVitte off Deacon for 23 (3 sixes and a four). Matt Caddy came in at three and won Man of the Match with a crisp 32 before he was bowled (a six and 2 fours). Having lost Davo at 52 for 25 (a six and 2 fours), Rowlands were now 106-3. Roy had started well with two fours but then was restricted to a series of singles before a final 4 and a 2 in his 23, bowled. Adeel Waheed and Craig Turnbull had no time except to score 4 and 1 not outs at the end of the 12 overs. Phil Hornsey did not even have time to get his pads on. The total of 118-4 off 12 might seem impressive but against Beamish was never going to be sufficient. They had fielded well and very alert to turn 4s into 2s and 2s into 1s.
The Beamish reply saw McVittie and Nixon take 21 off the one and only over from Richie Munro and 23 off the two from Ian Pratt. Chase Evans bowled well with 1-19 off 2, bowling out Nixon for 40. Adeel Waheed bowled well enough in the circumstances going for 39 off 3 and Don Catley gave brief hope with the dismissal of Paul Lumley caugh Friskin on the boundary and two tight overs. However, McVittie was still there and his final shot off Don took the biscuit and 4 runs to a reverse sweep cum drive; 2.1 overs 1-17 and Beamish home with 8 wickets in 10.1 overs. Roy kept wicket and there were only 2 extras. Two batting points for Rowlands struggling to win a game.

Rowlands travelled to Backworth to play Adders and Davo opened with Richie Straugan. The pair made a good steady start until Richie was caught in two minds and lofted a catch to mid off from the bowling of Andy Bryant when on 12 (1 four) off the 25 stand. Adeel Waheed came in three and the score moved on well to 68 when slow left armer Jack Concanon bowled him for 16 (2 fours) through a swing and miss. Davo kept the run pace going with well selected shots but the fielders were alert to save several boundaries that reaped only 2s. Quickfire Ralph Appleby hit 23 with the only 6 of the match and 2 fours before he to fell to Jack, plumb lbw adjudged by stand in umpire Roy of the black big toe! Davo was bowled late on by Joy Siena whilst seeking more urgent runs and his MoM 76 came with 8 fours. Jawed Qureshi 3 not out and Gary Straughan 1 not out both faced 2 balls as Rowlands terminated at 137-4 off 14, just 3 off the third batting point.
The Adders reply was immediately up with the asking rate as Ian Pratt went for 33 off 3 and Bob Wilson 22-1 off his opening 3, bowling out Dan Clark for 27. Don Catley took over from Ian and conceded only 1 run off his first over to bring down the run rate. His second over was even better; a wicket maiden with Richie Marshall clean bowled for 30. At the other end Adeel Waheed bowled 2 overs for 26 as Adders kept up the chase but now not quite the asking rate. Don then conceded two boundaries in the 11th over and Davo came on to bowl spin in the 12th over. Disappointingly, John Kimber and Bob Tulip both got a hold of the ball and the over went for 22 with five boundaries. Don's final over went for 15 (4-1-28-1) as Adders kept on totting up the runs and for the final over Bob returned to concede 2 fours off his opening two balls (3.2-0-30-1) go give Adders more than the required sum and indeed a third batting point with 141-2. In the field, Mike Steven kept well and there was only a single leg bye. Richie Munro and Gary and Richie Straughan in particular had chased well and Ralph had changed places for the left hander many times! Some difficult chances were put down but in the end Adders were in control and won a good contest. Kimber hit 47 not out and Tulip 24 not out.

Lost comfortably in the Cup to a Paddlers team enhanced by Ross Symington from Bates who hit 126 not out against the best bowling that Rowlands could serve up on the night. Pratty did well ewnough with 3-0-24-1. Don had a nightmare 1-0-24-0 should have kept going up the road from Devon! Richie 2-0-44-0 did not get any better and Davo 3-0-46-0 after arriving late made some good stops at the wicket. Roy the new bowling marvel achieved 3-0-39-1 with a granted lbw. There was a run out but 182-2 off only 12 was a huge ask.
The Rowlands reply saw the early loss of Davo for 4 (a boundary), bowled off the best ball of the night. Roy 33 not out off 42 (2 fours) and especially Faz Tahir 78 not out off 47 balls (4 fours and 5 sixes) restored some pride with Jawed Qureshi out LBW for 3. The reply of 131-2 was respectable but not enough with Phil, Brian and Mike padded up ready for the chance of action. So, no trip to Beamish for the next round!
Last week's stats:
Rowlands 130-6 (14) Davo 55 (11 fours), Roy 12 (2 fours), Ralph 31 (1 four, 3 sixes), Jawed Qureshi 0, Craig Turnbull 14 not out (2 fours), Phil Hornsey 5 (1 four), Mike Steven 3 held off Kirkwood 121-9. Richie Munro 2.3-0-28-3 then banned! Ian Pratt 4-0-36-1, Roy Haygarth 4-0-35-1, Bob Wilson 4-0-21-4!! Catches by Davo, Bob Wilson, Mike Steven 3 off and even Ralph Appleby!

Rowlands new team manager pulled together a competitive squad but lost Fenwick Friskin at short notice so fielded 10 against the Blue Flamers. Davo won the toss and opened with new boy Sam Malpass. All was going well in this 14 over game until Keith Brown slowed the scoring down, Sam was caught for 38, replaced by James Welsh, who scored 4 before popping up another Brownie special, and then the swashbuckling Roy with 26 not out. Davo was bowled by Brownie when on 40. Ralph came in for the last two balls and scored 1 before being run out off the last ball. This score on a big field was reckoned to be perhaps 20 short and so it proved for the ten men. Brownie recorded 3-28 off his 4 overs. Andy Horner had bowled with mixed success, Roy in particular enjoying a big six hit.
The Flames reply was urgent and they soon found the holes in the field despite Davo's best efforts to plug them. Richie had 23 knocked off his opening 2 overs before his knee tightened up. Pratty went for 37 off 3 and Don 38-1 off 4 including a caught and bowled, rare these days! Sam earned the man of the match for Rowlands with a steady 24-1 off 2.2 thanks to a catch by Richie but Flames were home with another 2 overs to spare. Mike Steven kept well and Ralph managed to find a divot in the ground to pop one up into Sam's eye area but he bravely returned to the field after brief treatment. Brian saved several runs at mid on and James Welch was like lightening in the field achieving a run out from the deep.

Rowlands have a new Team Manager for the season with Ian Pratt taking on this mantle, selecting and sorting the team whilst Don will arrange the fixtures themselves. Alan will avail himself but his busy life earning the sponsorship precludes his presence at all games! Hopefully a few new faces will materialise and help to see Rowlands back up the table. Captaincy will depend on availability with Davo and Matt then Richie the choice.
The first league fixture is at Blue Flames on Thursday 5th May; the first home game at Ulgham is Wednesday 11th, hosting Kirkwood and in the Sadler Brown Cup we travel on 18th May to Bates Cottages to play Shahe Paddlers.
