Rowlands catch out YAARS

(Posted On Tue 30 June, 2009)

Matt won the toss and inserted YAARS to good effect. The opening strike pair of Andy Robson and Richie Munro kept the YAARS boys under wraps. After a steady but slow start, Andy had Haji Sahin caught behind by Matt following a big six hit that took him to 21. Andy completed 3-0-17-1 with many balls unplayable. Richie then went mad and took 3 wickets in an over to claim 4-0-19-3 with 2 bowled including opener Rohail Ahmed for 18 and a catch by Colin Tait. Don bowled a steady 4-0-22-1 to keep the pressure on with a catch by Bob Tulip who had just been correctly positioned at point by Matt, although three other almost identical chances to deep mid on were not taken! At the other end Chad excelled with 3-0-17-4 thanks to catches by Richie, Roy, Matt again and Richie again. These were all good catches and well backed up with athletic fielding all round. YAARS were all out with a final suicidal run out for only 80 in the 14th and final over. The rest of the batsmen threatened but could not score runs against the well disciplined Rowlands team.

The Rowlands reply saw the new pairing of Chris Robson and Niall Penfold take to the crease against the attack of Bobby Vedhara and Mark Little. Runs were not going to be easily obtained and Chris fell caught Surj Singh off Vedhera for a duck. The YAARS celebrations were something else! Bob Tulip came in three with usual determination and the pair began to graft well together. Bobby went off injured after spilling a sharp caught and bowled attempt. Mark Little continued to bowl with venom but one superb hook from Bob brought a six and an important chink of light in the run chase. Bob and Niall matched eachother with careful shots and boundaries and achieved the target in the 11th over with only the one wicket down to ensure maximum 10 points to YAARS 1 batting point. Niall finished on 44 not out with a final 6 and 4 (4 fours, 2 sixes) and Bob hit 36 not out with that 6 and 4 fours. Mark Little bowled 4-0-26-0 and haji 2-0-10-0. Surj Singh was taken for 34 off 2.3 overs. Rowlands had a strong batting line up in the hutch but the pairing of Niall and Bob meant they were not required this time! Richie was awarded MoM for his superb bowling and catching.

Players expose Rowlands flip side!

(Posted On Thu 25 June, 2009)

Old Record Players won the toss and invited Rowlands to bat on a suspect sunset strip at Bullocksteads. Their bowling proved to be well suited to the conditions and Rowlands were held to a very disappointing 58-8 off 16 overs. Wickets tumbled steadily from the off: Wayne 1, Matt 1, Craig a boundary 4, Roy 5, Peter 4, Ian a duck. Alan then stuck around well for a few overs and scored 14 with two 4s, supported by the resiliant Guy Scholes with 16 not out (3 fours off well selected balls and many dots), after Chad went for 1. James Slater made a start to his Rowlands batting career with 5 not out. Not many runs to defend and Monday's opening strike pair unavailable. The opening bowlers were Bablani 4-0-10-3 and Colin Quiqley 4-1-13-3. Xohaib Shahid then kept up the pressure with 3-0-8-1.

Chad was welcomed back to the team and he opened the bowling to good effect with 12-1 off his first three overs with LBW of Ayan for 1 and denied a confident stumping appeal by Wayne and others. Don bowled a disappointimng over for 11 off and was replaced by Ian who 'Don style' immediately took a wicket, LBW of Bablani for 10. Chad's 4th over was hit for 16 although he had the pleasue of watching Matt perform a splendid man-of-the-match winnnig catch in the deep to dismiss opener Adam Holroyd for 22. Chad completed 4-0-28-2 and Ian 2.3-0-19-1 as the ORP men spun their final shots around the boundary to also take 2 batting points in defiance of the pitch. No points for Rowlands but pointers perhaps for the next game with YAARS!

Rowlands break their duck at Ulgham !

(Posted On Tue 23 June, 2009)

Bob Tulip took the captaincy for the league fixture against the Swalwell Nine Pins at Ulgham and showed his ruthless streak! Bob won the toss and put the Pins into bat, facing a charged up pairing of Richie Munro and Andy Robson. The pair obliged, supported by excellent, well drilled fielders. Richie took 4-1-7-4 and the MoM award with Andy 4-1-10-2 as the Pins just kept on falling. Ian Younger claimed last man and 3.5-0-21-1 after Don had cleaned up with 2-0-2-3 and young Peter Wilson got in a late over for 9 off. There were catches for Craig Turnbull, Rob Burns and Ian Younger with Gowla only conceding 3 leg byes. Great performance all round and Pins all down for 58 in the 15th over.

The Rowlands reply saw Bob Tulip and Colin Tait start up in determined fashion. Colin was not out 26 (3 fours), Bob scored 18 with two boundaries of different kinds and then Andy Robson and Richie Munro (first baller!) each ducked out to give Pins the faintest interest in the game! Phil hit his usual boundary, but only a 4 to be 6 not out when the target was met in time for maximum points, 59-3 in the 8th over. Craig Turnbull and Robbie were next padded up but not required to bat this time.

Rowlands slide towards division 2 continues ..

(Posted On Wed 17 June, 2009)

Don lost the toss to Adders and Rowlands were asked to bat anyway. Ian Younger and Andy Robson suffered a slow start with only 21 runs coming off the first 5 overs of Andy Bryant and Richie Marshall. Andy went bowled Marshall for 12 (1 four) and then Ian was caught off Marshall for 21 just as he was finding the boundary (3 fours). That was 45-2 off 8 overs and the tone of the innings changed dramatically as Bob Tulip and Richie Munro built up the momentum. After 12 overs it was 95-2 and going much better. Bob was caught of Bryant's final over (15th) that had been kept back and his MoM 46 included 5 fours and a six. Richie kept going for 44 not out (4 fours) built mainly on well worked singles punctuated by the occasional boundary. Phil Hornsey hit a six off his first ball but was caught off his second ball. Robbie made it to the crease for 1 not out in Rowlands 138-4 with Marshall 4-0-24-2 and Bryant 4-0-23-1 holding up the runs chase; four other bowlers were not so mean.

Robbie Burn's first two overs went for 30 and Chris Wilkie and Marshall started up with determination. Andy Robson bowled his 4 off the belt for 23 runs and the wicket of Wilkie caught for 16 by Gary Hall. After 5 overs Adders were 61-1 and finding gaps in the field. Martin Eve and Marshall could not be restrained by Richie Munro whose first 2 overs went for 25 and then Don's first over went for 16. However, Ian Younger in his first over bowled Marshall for 62 and Don then produce a double wicket maiden with a stumping and catch by the superb Guy Scholes who really had a good game behind the stumps (only 7 byes). Don improved to 3-1-27-2 and Ian claimed another wicket with a catch by Bob. Richie finally bowled Eve to give him 3-0-32-1 and it was down to Ian's final over with 5 runs needed for victory. The story was 0 0 1 1 0 0 1 and two byes off the final ball which moved sharply to leg and was missed by the batsman and unsighted keeper. A good effort from Ian with 4-0-20-2 but not quite good enough as Rowlands again came second in a good game of cricket. Adders were 139-6 with Kimber on 11 and Bryant on 5 at the end; they had been 103-3 off 12 overs and the match already well balanced at that stage.

Rowlands Frustrated at Ulgham, as losing streak continues at home venue.

(Posted On Tue 9 June, 2009)

Much like previous games at Ulgham, Rowlands were unable to break their home duck as they crashed out of the cup to Whitley Bay.

In the second round of the Cup, Rowlands were inserted by Whitley Bay. Wayne Ritzema fell in the first over to a good caught behind from Alex Giles. Matt and Roy then batted through with varied aggression until the 12th over with Roy driving well and Matt mainly cutting and pushing, working hard. Matt fell to young Ben Harris (son of Mark), bowled when he tried to up the tempo; 27 (3 fours). Phil came in and hit a quick 10 before being LBW father Mark. Ian Younger got an even quicker 10 (4 and 6) before being bowled by son Ben. Bob Tulip hit six singles to the boundary regions where fielders lurked. Roy remained not out for 51; his first half century for Rowlands with 6 fours. The target was set with 131-4 off 16. Alex had bowled 4-0-19-1 and young Ben 4-0-40-2.

The Whitley reply took 15 off Robbie's first over but then only 6 off his next two. Ian Younger was promoted to opening at the other end and he bowled Kenny for 3 in his second over. Ian got taken off after this second over when number 3 bat Alex Giles spoilt it with a 6 and a 4. After 5 overs, Whitley were already 36-1 with opener Graeme Ord also looking dangerous. Alan brought on Don with instructions to aim for the OFF STUMP. First ball Don obliged and the threat of Giles was removed, together with said off stump! Third ball Dave Sproat was trapped LBW and prospects for Rowlands were dramatically improved. Don finished off a double wicket maiden and followed up with two more Bay men bowled including the settling Mark Harris for 17 to record a MoM 4-1-18-4. Don now only needs 1 wickt to take hsi career total to 600. Alan did some sterling work preventing boundaries on both sides of the field behind the wicket. Robbie completed his spell with 4-0-33-0. Keith Clark was hit for 2-0-31-0 as runs kept coming and then Wayne was brought into the attack. He claimed a stumping by the alert Gowla of Lenny May for 15 but 2-0-18-1 was still not tight enough in the circumstances. Ian Younger returned to good effect with his third over going for only 5 and 5 for victory required off his last over. However, following a simple run out, a loose fifth ball in the final over saw another May (S) accept this gratefully with a 4 to square leg and victory by 3 wickets (132-7). Ian finished on a respectable 3.5-0-24-1. Match winner Graeme Ord finished on 62 not out after carrying his bat through the innings.
