The three new members of CCC proved highly effective against old rivals Genetics at a Heaton Medicals ground bathed in spring sunshine.
Runs are always hard to find at Heaton, so to accumulate over 100 runs on a very slow outfield suggests plenty of action, and accordingly spectators were treated to an entertaining game, with Messrs Tom Woolhead and Matt Planchant showing early season form against the competent swing bowling of Genetics.
Matt plays his cricket in the Botham style - hit as many sixes as possible, while Tom showed a more measured approach with some nice strokes in a mid-innings stand with the solid Simon Edwards, who, by all accounts has improved his running between the wickets for the new season!
Genetics seemed to be rather subdued at the break, but a sound start from their opening pair set the scene for a thrilling finish. Tom found that bowling to an inform Genetics pinch hitter was not easy, and by mid-innings the game was nicely balanced.
The CCC skipper however found his team eager to give 100 percent in the field, typified by new recruit Andy Holburn, who will remind many older members of David Comish - a fine athlete.
It's always nice to win in the last over of a tight game, but all credit to Genetics who as ever were very capable opponents. Watch out CCC in the rematch - last year I witnessed (from the boundary) broken shoulders and alll sorts of mayhem!
For now though well done; a fine win for a nicely blended side.
