CCC played host to Tyne Valley side Ovingham at Heaton on Sunday. The home side had a number of regulars unavailable, but welcomed Mallards star Gareth Taylor and debutant Chris Fowler into the starting line up. A problem arose, however, when Paul Bennett withdrew through illness before the start.
Tim Hall reduced Ovingham to 17-3 and 34-4 with a splendid spell of bowling. However, they had strength in depth and three batsmen (Lintern 74, McCardle 41 and R Jones 58) established a huge 205 all out off 39 overs.
This was always likely to be insurmountable for CCC, but they put together a carefully respectable response, finishing on 138-5. Andy Holburn was unlucky to be bowled off bat and pad for 0 by an 11 year old, but Peter Finkill hit an excellent 31 with some clean drives. Simon Edwards (53*)and Keith Hayward (18) then produced a most soporific stand, bludgeoning four boundaries between them, to guide the team well into three figures.
Another enjoyable day at a largely overcast Heaton, but CCC were (literally) a fielder short, and another hard-hitting batsman short against a very competent side; otherwise this would have been a tight game.
