Brilliant CCC Net 16 Points in 24 Hours

(Posted On Thu 4 August, 2005)

GREAT CHANCE OF SURVIVAL!

CCC produced two outstanding back-to-back performances to seal priceless victories in thir relegation struggle.

On Tuesday they hosted TYNE TEES TV at Heaton. CCC won the toss and inserted their opponents who progressed to 71-7 from 14 overs. Rian and Matt produced excellent opening spells and were well bbacked up by Cliff and John.

The target was reached comfortably in 8 overs, with Rian hitting 37 not out and extras also contributing with 14. This was a surprisingly comfortable victory against a side certain to go down, but which possesses some decent batsmen and one fast accurate bowler in the mould of Genetics' Chris Mee.

Wednesday saw CCC make their first ever trip to Backworth to play ADDERS, a team who inflicted a comprehensive defeat only a few weeks ago. Backworth MW is a large exposed pitch in the grounds of a former manor, a bit like a mini Close House. The pitch was so big that boundaries would be at a premium and field placings would have to be exact. There was also a stiff cross wind to contend with.

For the second night running CCC won the toss and inserted the opposition. Again, Rian and Matt bowled outstandingly, yet had to wait until the 8th over to make the breakthrough, Wallis suberbly caught by Ian at point. Rian followed up by dismissing the number 3 first ball, bowled, to finish with 4-0-7-2 (stats which included a streaky four in his first over!).

CCC, with many bowlers on holiday, called on Derek to bowl his first real spell of the season, which he did admirably (3-0-22-2), and employed Roger and Mudassar as fourth bowler. Roger got a wicket thanks to Andy's excellent catch at the second attempt on the mid-wicket boundary. Derek clean bowled Walker for 46 and picked up another - a more simple catch - to Simon E at mid on. The innings finished with a run out.

CCC started with a run out! Ian, victim of a direct hit in the first over, and the ghost of the Genetics collapse reared its head briefly. This time though Rian (34) and Mudassar (25) batted intelligently to put CCC within sight of the target, and Simons Edwards (10 not out) and Woodman (4 not out) saw the team home comfortably.

This was CCC's best all round performance of the season against the best side they have beaten. Key to the two performances were tight bowling, carefully considered field placings, and the taking of nearly all chances. Barring the most unexpected set of results it should clinch second division status for another year.

CCC: Rian, Ian, Mudassar, Simon E, Simon W, Matt, Peter, Roger, Andy, Keith H, Derek
