New look Rowlands fail to break Genetic Code

(Posted On Wed 28 May, 2008)

On a cold night in Heaton, Genetics elected to bat but after a superb opening salvo from Chad they were on the back foot. Chad's first 2 overs recorded 2-4 including bowling out bamboozled Bennett a superb running in catch of a skier by Roy with no joy for M Joy! Alex Giles settled into his new role well with 0-8 off his first 2 overs so Genetics were 14-2 off the first 4. 31 runs then came of the pairings next three overs until Chad bowled Kent to give him an impressive 4-0-21-3, with Alex returning a useful 3-0-20-0. Don, with only his second ball, bowled opener Gardner for 19 and built pressure with 2-0-8-1 with Martin also bowling a tight first over for only 6 runs. Then the floodgates opened after Jon Robinson escaped a firm stumping appeal off Don, well taken by Matt and Robinson with Andy Jeffrey went on the attack. Don's third over went for 23 to give the less respectable figures of 3-0-31-1 with Martin 3-0-32-0. Phil bowled a good last over for 7 runs including a stumping by Matt to remove Robinson who suddenly had scored 37. Jeffrey made 33 not out in Genetics' 117-5. The innings had been turned round after the failed stumping appeal. The fielding was good and the 11th man not really missed, especially with Phil covering two positions at the same time!

New boy Dave Hawke led the reply with Matt but after showing some expected class was caght in the covers for only 1. Matt was settling in after hitting a boundary but played on to a yorker length ball that was going down leg and his luck is just not in at the moment, out for 9. Phil, then Roy came in to try to accelerate the slow Rowlands start. Things were going well with Phil the main hope and a massive six endorsed this. However, he was bowled by Tarbuck for 34 (3 fours and that six). Roy remained at the helm but did not get enough of the strike to be left high and dry on 15 not out (1 four) as the rest of the line up capitulated. Alex hit a four then was out without adding to his score and Chris Dunn also hit a boundary before being out for 5. No other batsman scored a run as Chad was run out, Martin bowled, Don caught off a skier to mid off and Jack, brother of Phil was bowled. 93 all out for ten man Rowlands fell short by 24 runs with 12 balls left to be bowled. Rowlands took 3 points and will regroup for the next game which is against old rivals Kirkwood.
