Rowlands last ball Cup KO

(Posted On Fri 4 July, 2008)

Rowlands won the toss and batted first with Davo and Dave Hawke making a steady, solid start until Davo was adjudjed LBW in front but well down the track for 12 (one 4). Dave continued to dominate as Phil Morse struggled for once before rival Chris Beever bowled him for 6 (one 4). Dave was bowled by Sam Taylor for 42 after some good aggression (three 4's and a 6). With the score on 42-1 off 7 overs and 53-2 off 10 there was an urgent need for acceleration and Roy 17 not out (one 4) and especially Chad 25 not out (three 4s and a 6) provided this to bring the total up to 107-3 off 14 overs when the rain came down.

It looked unlikely that play could be resumed but, after a full 30 mins delay, the groundsman declared the pitch playable even though the rain had just stopped and Monkseaton commenced their innings in a 14 overs tie rather than the original 16 overs. They started with urgency even though Kevin Taylor was caught for only 6 at the wicket by John Harrison off James Morris. Chad then had the diminutive Beever bowled for only 5. Skipper Bob Zanetti batted on with number 4 bat Sam Taylor and after 6 overs Saints were ahead with 47-2 off 6 overs. James took a steady 3-0-21-1 and Chad 3-0-25-1 (included two 4s and a 6 in his third over!) but there were two dropped chances in this time. Don then was pleased to get a bowl after umpiring and handling the long delay and got Zanetti well caught by Phil in the first over. he then trapped Paul Marks lbw for 4 and with his next ball took the middle stump of Windass to claim 3-0-23-3. At the other end, Rob Burn improved to bowl 3-0-22-0. With the score on 92-5 and two overs to bowl, Davo took control and bowled the 13th over. He had the troublesome Sam Taylor caught well by James Morris at wide mid on for 44 but a boundary and three wides meant 10 came off the over and Phil had little room for manoeuvre in the last over with 7 needed. First ball was a single, second ball he bowled Wilkes for 16. Then 1,dot,1,2,1,dot meant one was needed off the last ball. It went for 2 just past wide mid on and Saints were just home. Technically Phil bowled 1-6 in his over with Saints needing only 1 off the last ball.
