On a foggy night at Tynemouth in early July, Kirkwood were not ready by 6:15 and Rowlands decided to bat first. Skipper Shaun sent in new recruits Steven Scott and Kingsley McGarrigle to get us a good start in this table top battle. Kingsley showed promise but was bowled by Bilal Haider for 5 and so enter Phil Morse to join his Tynemouth mate. The pair did very well against an aggressive attack and ever changing field to take the score on well. Steven went for 25 (1 four) LBW Haider by Ed Collins Snr. Shaun Collins was bowled Amjad for 4 to let in James davidson who paired up well with Phil and the score raced to 143-4 when Phil was out off the penultimate ball stumped off the bowling of Hussain for 48 (3 fours and 2 huge sixes). James made 33 not out (2 fours) and Guy Saxton fended off a leg bye for the last ball. Total: 144-4 in the fog. Bilal recorded 4-0-22-2.
Kirkwood needed coaxing out on to the field to complete the fixture. Conditions were unpleasant but had not deteriorated any further. Guy opened up the attack and soon had Anil bowled for 5. He bowled very tight stuff with 4-0-18-1 and only ten men on the field. Don Catley at the other end had Parak well stumped by Steven for only 8 and his 3 overs cost 28 runs. Amrit Crawford reluctantly batted on for his 44 not out accompanied by Bilal who was caught by a sub fielder for 50 off James. Sadly Aiders had left the field having suffered a badly dislocated and broken finger a few overs previously. Kingsley politely asked for a sub fielder and Kirkwood sympathetically obliged. This incident and jesture for which Kirkwood were thanked took much of the tension out of the game. Roy Haygarth in the murky deep won a bowling point with a clean catch off James who bowled a tight final over with figures of 4-0-37-2 to give victory by 21 runs. Shaun bowled three important overs for 32. Kirkwood total 123-4. Rowlands 8 points, Kirkwood 3. Man of the Match was Phil Morse who also fielded well and whose bowling prowess was kept in reserve.
Get well soon Aiders and also Dave Charlton who went over on an ankle the morning of the game and the morning after his Silver Wedding party! Thanks to Ed Collins Snr. for helping to get Aiders to hospital.
