Rowlands beat Civils in Cup!

(Posted On Wed 16 May, 2007)

In a low scoring game Rowlands won through thanks to timely acceleration from James Hay after a quiet spell chasing 86-8 off 14 overs.

Civil Service elected to bat and E Lord (Ed!) batted for a long time for his 40 with Praueen Korabandi 13 the other batsman to reach double figures. An uncharacteristic over from James Morris was generous to the batting side as James struggled with length and direction. Dave Charlton on the other hand was his typical self and recorded 4-0-19-1. James Hay relieved his namesake and contained better with 3-0-22-0. By the mid-innings stage, Civlis had commited several suicidal runouts and our Lord went with the fourth such mix up. Roy impressed with 3-1-12-1 whilst also protecting the short legside boundary, preferred at that end by skipper James Davidson to Don who took his usual 2 wickets in 3-0-17-2. There were catches from Keith Brown and keeper Dave Gowland. Roy was probably denied a second wicket when the bail came off with the keepers gloves somewhere nearby.

Ten man Rowlands took to the field minus (where was he?) Eddie. Davo and newcomer David Ladd looked solid to start with against the attack of Praueen Korabandi and the legspinner Norman Sattar. David and then Keith Brown fell cheaply to the wiles of Sattar as the ball spun off the bat. James was looking his typical self and began driving in usual style, only to be outdone by a stunning c&b from Praueen Korabandi. Guy played himself in with a series of delicate singles and James Hay also decided to see off Sattar. James Fox joined the attack and also bowled tightly so runs were coming only at a trickle with 40 on the board at the half way point. A poor over from a fill in bowler (as Sattar kept one back) was the turning point. He followed James Morris and lost track of the stumps with 19 coming off the over, mainly in extras but also the bat of our James! James and Guy put on 36 for the fourth wicket before Guy was stumped off Sattar, bowling his last over eventually. In came Roy with style to hit two boundaries and finish off the job on 9 not out. James Hay 22 not out was justifiably awarded Man of the Match.
