Genetics crush Mallards

(Posted On Mon 24 May, 2004)

The traditional game against Mallards got under way at Close House with Genetics winning the toss and electing to bat on a beautiful sunny day. A solid opening partnership of 59 between Mark Buckley (20) and Mike Gardner (59) set the scene, and when Jon Robinson said that he wanted to make a century against Gareth’s team, nobody doubted him. Unfortunately, he ran out of overs, and he had to settle for 73 not out. I don’t think he gave a chance at all in what can only be described as a technically flawless innings which helped Genetics reach 173 for 6 off 40 overs. In reply Mallards were quickly in trouble thanks to a fiery opening spell from Brian Taylor and Chris Mee who suddenly made the pitch seem unplayable, unplayable to all except for Andrew Porteous, whose departure for 46 signalled an abrupt end to the Mallards’ resistance. Brian Taylor finished with 2 wickets and was supported by Gary van Doorn who took 3, and Davy Heslop chipped in at the end with two wickets, Genetics winning by 68 runs.

Genetics lose to CCC in close encounter

(Posted On Mon 24 May, 2004)

Heaton Park was the setting for the clash of old rivals and although the result did not go our way, it at least was an excellent match. CCC batted first, and Genetics made early inroads, capturing both openers with the score only on 8. The middle order was made of sterner stuff however, and CCC quickly took the score up to 109 off their 14 overs, Jonty Tarbuck took 2 wickets notwithstanding. The Genetics innings now took on its familiar role of the top order crumbling away, Andy Porteous (16) and Andy Goulding (12) both getting a start before Andrew Jeffery almost stole the game at the end with a swashbuckling 35, before being bowled out going for one bit hit too many. Genetics lost their way in the end to finish on 102 for 8, still just 7 runs short.

Cavalier batting costs Genetics

(Posted On Mon 24 May, 2004)

In Genetics worst cup run for years, they found themselves out of the Cup before they had really started, beaten by a strong Gateshead Cavaliers. Cavaliers batted first, and made 100 off their 14 overs, Grant Mason managing to injure himself bowling. The Genetics innings never really got going and only Simon Whitehall (14) and Chris Mee (19) managed to give the scoreline any respectability down the order, before we were bowled out for 79. Thank goodness we’re not playing in their league was the consensus.

Riding Mill beaten

(Posted On Mon 24 May, 2004)

Riding Mill succumbed to a strong Genetics side on Sunday at Close House. Batting first, the two Andrews sisters Jeffery and Porteous made a strong start before they were both bowled for 19 and 18. Mike Gardner batted well before he was bowled, and then followed a middle order collapse before Chris Mee came in and top scored with 37, taking the score to 135. The Riding Mill innings never really took off and although they still had wickets left, they preferred to bat out the overs (maybe we should have told them it wasn’t a timed game), and Genetics won by 33 runs.

Genetics on song

(Posted On Mon 24 May, 2004)

In the first of a month of Sundays at Close House, Genetics played Ovingham Bridge End. Batting first, Ovingham were quickly in trouble, losing wickets steadily. But steady batting by the later batsmen saw them steady to reach 94 for 8 off 35 overs. Chris Mee and Brain Taylor each picked up 2 wickets. But that total was never going to enough, and in reply Genetics knocked off the runs in 15 overs, Mark Buckley, Raj Rihal, and Jon Rob all scored 20, and Andrew Poteous and Andy Goulding chipping in with 17 and 13 respectively.
