The North-East Mid-Week Cricket League Merz & McLellan Cup was won by the President’s XI for the first time in 5 years. They defeated 2016 League Champions Kirkwood in a superb and close contest.
Kirkwood elected to bat and posted 233-7 off their 40 overs. Opener G Balasundaram hit 102 with two sixes and ten fours in an opening stand of 100 with Ihsan Ashraf . Majid Ansari scored 55 batting at 3. For the President’s XI, skippered by Ross Symington, Chris Fowler took 4-45 off his 8 overs spell aided by three fantastic catches in the deep by Joe Mavin.
A superb opening stand of 96 saw Dan Keegan 45 and Alan Robson 60 sow the seeds of victory for the President’s XI. Ben o’Brien at three scored 43, Ross Symington 30 and Ross Atkinson 39 not out finished the job with only two overs to spare. Ross hit two big sixes to complete the win by 4 wickets. Best bowling figures for Kirkwood was Aqid Shehzad with 2-39 off 6 overs and again there were some very good catches in a tight finish.
In the unavoidable absence of President Malcolm Kennedy, Paul Cheesmond, a former finance director at Merz & McLellan, presented the Cup to skipper Ross Symington. Percy Main CC were excellent hosts and the sunshine most welcome.
