Sadly one of the characters of the area is no longer with us. We have lost Alan Docherty of Backworth CC, Cooksons NEMWCL team, the Nomads, Newcastle CC and the County Over 50s.
Alan, who played throughout Cooksons' time in the league, died on the final Saturday of July. He had been ill for a few months but his condition worsened over the past few weeks. Ian Denton, former Assistant League Secretary visited him a few days previously and reminisced over memories playing in the NEMWCL. Alan was a character who will still be known by many still playing cricket on Tyneside.
Sympathies go out to his family and close friends and colleagues at this sad time.
Alan's very well attended funeral was held on Friday 2nd August at Tynemouth Crematorium, 11:15 am followed by an appropriate gathering at Newcastle CC. This is where Alan played his final full season of cricket last year and received a player of the year award based on his still impressive bowling statistics.
