Merz and McLellan Cup

The traditonal opener for the NEMWCL season is the Merz & McLellan cup at Swalwell CC with the President's XI hosting last season's Champions Rowlands Chartered Accountants.

The President's XI skipper Paul Smith elected to bat and they made 120 all out against an effective Rowlands attack. Opener Delaviz Khan scored 24, Stuart Watson 13 and Arsalan Rahim 30 as the top order made good progress. The opening attack of Ian Pratt 1-29 and Andy Horner 2-12 were followed by David Covell 3-23 and Peter Finch 2-32 who stifled the innings as wickets fell at regular intervals. A cameo of 2-12 from Don Catley including the wicket of skipper Smith then finished the innings.

Rowlands were clearly over-confident at tea or perhaps the tea was too enjoyable but, apart from James Carr with 20 and Perhaps 12 from Roy Haygarth, Rowlands were routed. Rahim with 3-18 and Smith 3 of the top 4 for only 24 in a six over spell followed by 2-15 from Sam Roseby and a tight 1-9 off 4 overs by President's grandson David Cowling visiting from Somerset comfortably accounted for Rowlands although 30 runs were scored by the final four batsmen in brief defiance with a final total of only 85.

President Malcolm Kennedy CBE presented the cup to Paul Smith.

News from the April Meeting

The JustSport Cup draw involving 33 teams is attached together with a convenient summary of the revised procedure for confirming and postponing fixtures.

The minutes will follow mid of next week once the amendments to club particulars and other data have been collated.

Meeting Wednesday 10th April

The scorecards and Fixtures Booklets are ready to be issued so please have your representative there to collect them. But will the weather improve in time??!

What will be the pairings in the Just Sport Cup? - Draw to be made tomorrow night.

Note the meeting will be held upstairs in the old building at Blue Flames - the Belsay Suite.

Meeting Notice for Wednesday 10th April

The Meeting is at Blue Flames on Wednesday April 10th, commencing 7:30pm.

Latest News: Regrettable FHCC have resigned owing to lack of numbers in thair squad - some of whom will now play for Sparta. Division 2 and Division 3 will now both operate with only 7 teams this season.

Please note that Fixtures Booklets and Score Cards will be issued. Attendance by a representative from each club is expected and new increased fines of £10 per absence will be levied. The draw for the Just Sport Cup will be made.

Pink cricket balls are encouraged but not mandatory this season. Justsport are currently stocking an appropriate choice.
