Merz & McLellan Cup

2010 League Champions Beamish retained the Merz & McLellan President’s Cup with another emphatic victory over the President’s XI at Swalwell. Batting first, Beamish got off to a flier with 83 off the first 12 overs. Anthony Ward blazed the trail with 102. Although there was a quiet mid-innings period the final total of 235-5 off the 40 overs was very competitive despite some short boundaries. Gary Christie made 46 and Tim Hughes 57 not out with wickets being shared around by the President’s men, led in the field by skipper Richie Smith standing in for the injured Paul Smith. The President’s XI reply struggled immediately against Richie Deacon and Christie with wickets falling at regular intervals. New man and competent wicket keeper Sam Roseby shone as a single star making 82 off 78 balls with only No. 9 bat Matt Ellinor’s steady supporting 25 not out offering significant resistance. Christie recorded 8-1-16-4 and Deacon 7-1-28-2 with Paul Armstrong helping to mop up with 5-0-20-3 as the President’s XI were dismissed for 152 in the 36th over.

President Malcolm Kennedy presented the Cup to skipper Ryan McVittie and thanked Swalwell, senior umpire Brian Taylor and all for the arrangements on a superb day. Match balls were supplied by Just Sport.

Charity Promotion

Dr Joe Cosgrove of the Freeman Hospital is currently organising a fund-raising evening for their Integrated Critical Care Unit. As part of the fund-raising they are hosting a black-tie dinner dance at South Northumberland CC on Saturday 14th May. During the evening we’ll have a charity auction and two of the prizes will be a cricket bat signed by the England Cricket Team after the Sydney Test Match and an hour’s coaching with Geoff Cook. Sealed bids will be accepted from people who are unable to attend and felt that such items may be something that a cricket club-house area or a cricketer (young or old) at your club might benefit from.

The reserve prices are as follows:
Signed Cricket Bat: £200
One Hour coaching session with Geoff Cook: £70
