Sparta kicked off the season last night with a friendly against league newcomers Kings School Old Boys at Cramlington.
It was a game of two halves as an encouraging bowling and fielding performance was let down by a disappointing team effort with the bat.
Steve Foulds was the pick of the bowlers as he picked up 2-12 including a stunning caught and bowled above his head.
Andy Langley was the only batsman to come out of the game with any credit with a well crafted knock of 36 not out.
Sparta finished on 66 falling 28 runs short of Kings' 94-7.
