On a damp, wet windy August evening YAARS arrived at Beamish ‘to the sound of music’ – Beamish had ‘pumped up the volume’, to welcome the opposition. A very large speaker “blarred” out music from the Beamish & Stanley Social club……Frank Sinatra and Tom Jones.
The YAARS seemed totally unfased and asked for some of their favourite bollywood and bhangra tracks…Pattaz, informed the lads that unfortunately, Bollywood nights were on Tuesday’s at the Hill-top…never mind lads……This brought back memories of the YAARS hay days back in the early 1990’s…..when, “The Boy’s are back in town, We will rock you, and Eye of the Tiger” us too blare out a handheld Ghetto Blaster….
Beamish won the toss and skipper R McVitte decided to bowl first, YAARS opened their inning with Big Billy Ahmed and Boom Boom Naveed, Billy Ahmed took the bull by the ‘Tom Horns’ - with 4,4,6,6,4,1 taking G Johnson (Lintz opening bolwer), apart……R Decon opened from the other end and bowed a steady line and length…Billy Ahmed continued to plunder the ball to all part with “Wor Jackies” Reebok baseball bat…….Eventually haughling out in the 6th over with the score on 82, Billy departed for 68 from only 29 balls faced. (7@6’s , 4@4’s)… 82 for 1, enter Big Waz, who had bombed it straight from work, the Big lad went for a biggin to continue the YAARS momentum, toe ended it and become A Wards first victim…. Yaars 89 for 2, Omar came to the wicket came to the crease played a cultured knock accumulating a steady 19, Naveed progressed steadily to 21, which included one boundary, a well earned four. Naveed got bowled through frustration, for 21, Chattejee cam to the wicket and batted sensibly, taking the score to 151 for 5, before being caught to a great catch by Young bowled Kirkbride…Enter Haji ‘da Great’ chak no 333….forget Alexandra da Great Haji was hitting balls all over the world saying ‘conquered’ that, H accumulated 34no in no time, including 4 BIG ones, (Beefy, we are not talking girls from the B&S Social either)…..
Ricky chipped in with a quick blast and Beefy finished the inning with a red inker…2no….YAARS finished on 193 for 6 in 14 overs….17@6’s in the innings… and 9 @ 4’s.
Beamish had a lot of work to do, the YAARS filled a bag of balls…..and took, the pitch….A Ward and R McVitte entered the arena like Gladiators to the European Football theme tunes
Marc Chootay took the handbrake off and in he came bowling a tidy first over, McVitte tried to pull one straight to R Saeed who dropped him on the line – this could have been costly, but, Chootay, came storming back bowling McVitte a bouncer which was onto him a bit too quick and the Real Deal, Big Wasim Bari Aslam snapped up a simple catch….Neel Chatterbox, opened from the other end and having P Lumley caught at mid off for 1 – A Ward went ballistic, he batted like a man possessed, took littla, apart, followed by Haji ‘dats another six’ and then took on the spinners. The boy hits it Big, Yaars picked up Dixon for 11, bowled Saeed caught Aslam…and then a partnership developed between G Johnson and A ward, bringing the Beamish lads some hope, Omar then came on to take the wicket off Johnson for 40 caught and bowled, with all the pressure on Ward….Ricky bowled well, and yorked Ward as he advanced down the wicket to plunder another big en.….Ward departed on 87 giving the B&S lads a glimmer of hope…..Beefy continued to sledge the lads saying they had “two hopes Bob Hope and no hope” – the game was played in very good sportsman spirit…..N Young came to the crease went for a big one early door and skyed it miles, at least three miles in the air, Rolly made the ground but failed to hold onto it, which again could have proved crucial. Young went on for a well earned 14no including 2 6’s in the last over off O Ahmed.
Last over with 18 to win, 1166,110 x1(wide and stumped), Decon, last ball with the scores and wickets tied YAARS 193 for 6 and Beamish 193 for 6, Ward danced down the wicket going for glory and Wasim Bari ‘fast fingers Jeremy not beadle’ whipped off the bails for the YAARS to take the mach on wickets….What a game, what a finish…..
Credit and total respect to all the Beamish lads and their supporters for sportsmanship and such a great game.
